  • What sort of Algae eater would work in a brackish tank set up?

If you are looking for something that will behave like a plecostomus does in freshwater tanks, then I'm afraid you are out of luck. There is an altenative, though. One of the best algae eating fish in brackish water is the common sleeper gobie (Dormiator maculatus). These fish will eat most types of soft algae that grow in the aquarium. Unfortunately, they are rater docile, and tend to be abused by the "typical" brackish fish such as scats, puffers, and monos. Better tankmates would be mollies, rainbows, or other gobies. There really is no algae eater that will work with the more aggressive brackish fish.

  • Over a month ago a light dusting of a whitish "algae" appeared on the side of my tank. After collecting a sample and looking under a microscope small plant-like structures were observed. From a stalk many spore-like ends branch off. It grows fast. Is this some sort of fungus?

No, it is not a fungus. What you are seeing is simply the holdfasts of algae which are analogus to roots of plants. If you allowed it to continue growing, it would turn green or brown in color.

  • Hi I have 4 goldfish in a hexagon aquarium. The water smells like rotton eggs the day after I clean the tank. Is it algae or is it something else?

Either you have a sulphur problem with your tap water which is possible if you use well water, or you do not have at least a 30 gallon tank and/or adequate filtration needed for 4 goldfish and the fish are polluting the aquarium faster than you can clean it.

  • I also have a question about paint. I wish to paint an aircraft model and place in my tank. Do you have any recomendations on how to make it safe for my fish?

No, that's NOT a good idea!

  • I have four goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. They all seem healthy. Lately I've noticed a rust-colored film delvelop on the sides of the tank. I'm able to remove it with an algae brush and it doesn't seem to be hurting my fish, but I wonder what it is. I have well-water. Is it rust?

It may be iron oxide deposits. You could check that with an iron test on your tapwater which may be purchased in a hardware store. More likely it is either red algae or red cyanobacteria (a primitive form of algae) caused by high levels of organics. Four goldfish really belong in a 30 gallon tank. As they've grown, they are produucing lots of waste which can cause red algae growth.

  • How do you breed Green Spotted Puffers?

There are no proven techniques. Breeding in captivity has only occurred by chance.

  • About 5 weeks ago, I replaced my substrate in my 400 gallon freshwater tank from gravel to sand. What can I do about the cloudy water?

You will need to let the tank cycle and then perform a water change.

  • I added liquid plant supplement to my new planted aquarium. I have an outbreak of hair algae. What can I do?

You greatly increased the organic content of your tank without properly cycling and stocking it. Perform a water change and let the tank cycle.
