How do you destinguish male Gouramis from the females?
Males have a longer pointed dorsal (top) fin and females have a short rounded dorsal fin.

I have a Dual-Betta-Hex aquarium in which I have a Betta on either side of the window. I recently purchased a female and put it with one of the males because I am interested in them mating. Am I doing the right thing?
Probably not. The male will probably kill the female unless she is ready to breed. If you want to get serious about breeding Bettas, you need to do some reading on the subject. We have several FAQ that give more details.

How many babies can a Platy have?
Between 6 and 18, depending on the age and genetic make-up of the female and males in the aquarium.

I have a 2 Guppys I think are pregnant. One has a gravid black spot on her abdomen. Is there any other way to tell if they are pregant?
The presence of a gravid spot in female livebearers means they are pregnant. No other method is needed.

When I feed my Convict Cichlid fry, the crushed flakes don't sink. What should I do?
Put the flake food in the tank holding it just below the water surface for a second or two before releasing it into the water.

How do I know if my tiger barbs are pregnant?
Tiger Barbs are egg-layers. Females become gravid or filled with unfertile eggs when it's time to breed. The eggs are laid or scattered with the male swimming behind releasing sperm as eggs are released. Female Tiger Barbs are larger and less colorful than males, particularly when the species breeds.

I recently introduced a couple blue platies into my tank, and one pregnant female has given birth to a couple pink fry. However, I have also noticed her passing a few clear, round, egg-like sacs. What are these?

I want to start a Guppy business. I have a 15 gallon tank and a few Guppies. At the moment I don't have the money to buy six 10 gallon tanks to breed them. To whom would I sell them? Do you recommend I start one and why or why not? Any tips would be appreciated.
The days of hobbyists breeding commonly-found freshwater fish and selling them locally have been over for many years, with a few exceptions. If you want to make money breeding fish, you either have to invest thousands of dollars for a large-scale operation, or specialize in species which are fairly rare or hard-to-get.

How old do baby livebearers have to be to breed?
They will usually reach sexual maturity in one year or less if they are kept under good conditions and fed a varied diet.

I was wondering if it is a good idea to have one male and one female comet goldfish, two male comet goldfish, or two female comet goldfish?
Unless you are buying very large Comets, you will probably not be able to determine their sex, so we say - Simply buy two Comets.
