  • A year ago I purchased a few guppies as feeder fish for my saltwater fish. It just so happened that the 2 guppies were a male and a female. The guppies survived and bred. We easily have over 200 of them in our tank now. Is this normal?

Guppies surviving in saltwater and breeding is not hard to believe. The fact that not all the guppies were consumed is hard to believe.

  • I have 5 serpae tetras who do not want to eat. I feed them flakes and tubefix worms. But they dont eat much or not at all. I have a bubble wall and a Penguin biowheel filter. Is it because of too much commotion in the water that their not feeding?

In time, your fish should be able to feed under these conditions. I would place the bubble wall close to the back of the tank. In the meantime, turn off the air pump and filter during feeding. Once the fish get accustomed to taking the food, you can try feeding when everything is on.

  • I recently bought two bettas and neither of them will eat. Do you have any suggestions for how to get a betta to eat?

You can try feeding live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms, blood worms, or black worms. Be aware that live foods often carry diseases.

  • We left a food block in w/ our 4 goldfish when we went away. Upon returning, 1 fish was dead, 1 lived until the next morning and the other 2 looked terrible. The water was cloudy as well. What happened?

Sounds like the feeding block added to much food to the tank and the resulting rotting food caused the water quality in your tank to decay. Next time I would recommend a auto feeder that runs on a timer.

  • We have a crayfish in our 10 gallon tank with two goldfish. They seem to be good tankmates, but is there a better food alternative for the crayfish than the flakes the goldfish miss which eventually settle to the bottom? We don't want to over-feed the goldfish in order for the crayfish to get it's share.

  • I purchased an Orange Spotted Filefish and need to know what to do to keep it alive?

Even if you had SPS corals that you were willing to sacrifice, it is not a guarantee that these fish would survive. This fish should never be sold for the aquarium trade and I stronly advise hobbyists to stay away from purchasing them.

  • Can I feed betta food to a tank with a betta and other variety of fish?

Yes. You should also feed quality frozen food to your tank. All the fish will benefit from it.

  • Suggestions on what if any type of vacation food block is available for a betta fish.

I would not recommend any of the block vacation foods due to their high concentration of phosphates.

  • Will goldfish eat ghost shrimp?

Potentially yes, if the goldfish was large enough and the ghost shrimp was small.
