  • Just got 55 gl. tank w/magnum 220 filter, not sure how or what needed to use the filter and what elses needed to have good set-up. Need info and tips on how to change from 20gl w/2angel,2 clowns, kouli loaches, 6neons, otocostamas, pacostamas, and upside down catfish,to a 55gl. Help

Addition equipment we reccommend would include the following: an adequate wet/dry sump (15-18 gallons) with pump and overflow, and a good sized (15 to 25 Watts) Ultraviolet sterilizer with dedicated pump. As for the actual transfer to the larger aquarium, save all your water for the new tank, or even set up the new tank and let it cycle before doing the transfer if possible. Good luck!

  • I am setting up a trickle filter for my 150G tank. If I put the heater on the sump will I get the same results? Also should I put the power heads on the bottom or the top of the tank?

You can place your heater in your sump with equal effectiveness, but make sure that it is not in contact with anything but water. I would place the powerheads in opposite sides of the tank and keep one high and one low.

  • I have a 55gal aquarium and an aquatic turtle. I have been through two canister filters, a Fluval and a Magnum. They didn't do the job. What filtration should I use?

Turtles produce solid waste which rapidly clogs filters. We would recommend using a canister filter rated for an aquarium at least three times the size of your tank.

  • I switched to a 20 gallon tank from a 10 gallon. All my angelfish died. My Irridescent Shark developed red swollen areas and its tail is disintegrating. Can What's going on? I already treated them with the tetracyclin just in case. pH of the water is fine.

It sounds like it was a rough move. We wonder if you started the new tank with new gravel and filters. To transfer fish from an old to a new tank, you must be careful to use most of the old water, all of the old gravel and run the old filter on the new tank for several weeks before putting on a larger filter. That way you won't lose the beneficial bacteria that keep the fish alive. If the fish is not eating, it may not recover. If it's eating, dissolve one tablespoon of Epsom salt and one tablespoon aquarium salt in some warm water and add the solution to the tank over a period of four hours. If the fish responds to that and feeds, do nothing else and let it heal. Otherwise, use Aquatronics Spectrogram.

  • I have a 55 gallon fish-only freshwater tank with a wet/dry filter. I keep having cloudy water. Do I need a powerhead for more water circulation or what?

Your tank needs time to cycle if it is a new setup.

  • I have a 10 gallon fish tank and was wondering if a 145gph pump is to strong for my fish to handle the current?

    Yes.

  • Could you please tell me the difference between a Tidepool 2 and a Fluval filter?

The Tidepool is considered a wet/dry filter. The Fluval is a canister filter.

  • I'm setting up a 180 gallon tank for goldfish. What are your ideas on the best way to filter my tank?

You can purchase 2 canister filters from the Eheim Classic series or their Professional series.

  • What is the proper water level in a wet-dry sump?

You can have the water level in line with the white plastic grid that supports the bio-balls.

  • I use a canister filter for my freshwater planted aquarium. What else should I stock it with besides the fine and coarse sponges that came with it?

I would only use the canister filter for mechanical filtration and to add more current in the tank. Keep what you have and the plants should do the rest.
