  • Should I buy 2 small powerheads to put on each uplift tube of my undergravel filter or just put a powerhead on one uplift tube?

Two smaller powerheads over 2 lift tubes is a better setup than 1 lifttube with a larger powerhead.

  • How do I prime my Penguin 125 filter?

Fill the filter with water and plug it in. If it is still not primed, make sure the impeller is seating properly in the filter.

  • I am setting up a 35 gallon freshwater aquarium and have just purchased a Eheim 2215 for filtration. Is this enough?

If the Eheim is properly stocked with the right biological, chemical, and mechanical media, it will be sufficient to filter your tank.

  • Is it advisable to use a fluidized-bed filter in place of the recomended wet-dry filtration?

You can use a fluidized bed filter instead of a wet/dry filter and still achieve success.

  • I have read many forums sugggesting to take the bio-balls out of my wet/dry filter. Could I then turn this into a refugium?

No, because the spillover from the tank into your sump is too violent and the intake for the pump should be free of any matter that could potentially clog it.

  • Is a bio-wheel work in a saltwater take or will the salt dry in the wheel?

Hi Joshua, A bio-wheel is fine in a saltwater tank.

  • I'm upgrading to a 90 gallon aquarium and had a question about filters. Should I be looking at out-of-aquarium filtration systems or in the tank? Thanks.

Hi Justin, In tank undergravel are o.k., but require more maintanence than Hang-On-The-Tank, or Canister Filter. Eheim make great canister filters, Marineland makes a good Hang-On-The-Tank type. If you are using a undergravel I would recommend power heads for increased flow.

  • I have a new clear for life 125 gal built in wet/dry and want to switch to the berlin method. Can wet&dry filters be used in combination with a berlin sump and protein skimmer combo. I was avised to get rid of bio balls and put live rock instead.

Hi Kevin, A true Berlin System uses the Live Rock in you tank as the filter and a protein skimmer to remove dissolved organics. Kalkwasser along with other additives (Iron, Iodine, Strontium, etc.) are used to supplement calcium and other nutrients vital to the corals survival. You can use Bio Balls with no ill effects, but the live rock is usually all you need.

  • Do you just simply put the powerheads in the uplift tubes of the under gravel filter?
