They are dying from a combination of poor lighting and low nutrients in the water.

  • I have a fresh water tank with 2 potted plants inside The microsorum is getting transparent leaves. I use a light designed for growing plants and use fertilized soil, what else can I do to encourage healthy aquatic plants?

The light and fertilizer are good choices for growing freshwater plants; however, not all plant species are as hardy as some. Most freshwater plants require addition of C02.

  • I have a 55 gal freshwater aquarium with and underground filter, will this affect live plants in the aquarium?

No it should not negatively affect your plant life. There is the possibility of the plants roots (which commonly grow out into the water column rather than down) could be sucked down, but this should not have a negative effect other than over time clogging your underground filter.
