I have had a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium for about 3 years. I now want to upgrade to a 125 gallon aquarium. A neighbor of mine has had one for a year or so, but has not been successful with filtration. What type, brand, and size filter would you suggest for an aquarium this size? Also how about an undergravel filter system to supplement the main filtration system. I have heard of wet/dry, cannister, etc. Need some direction on this.
Thanks in advance
Spike

Large Fresh water aquariums are not my specialty. But In a system this large I would think that a Wet and dry filter system would do the trick and do it quite well. It will provide a great enviroment for a bio system.
I would love a new 125 gal but I would have go with a Marine tank :D Congrates on getting a new tank.

If you wiah to have an undergravel flter in yuour tank there are a few things to concider. First what kinds of fish are you going to have? Large fish often dig on the gravel and make the gravel uneven in depth so that the gravel is not having as big a filtration as it should have. But you can get around this by putting "eggcrate over the undergravel filter plate to the depth needed. This will keep the fish frome digging in the gravel. I would use canister filters in the tank running the under gravel filter in reverse flow (the discharge or clean water beig pumped down the tubes to force water up through the gravel and keeping the uneaten foods and fish manure in suspension so that the canister filter can filter out the junk.) Also by using the canister filters you can punp the water out of the tank faster when you do a water change, and with a 125 gallon tank I would do a 12 to 25% water change weekly. With that size of a tank I would suggest at least 2 and maybe up to 4 Magmuum 330 (canister filters). One for each one or two "uplift tubes" but in the case of reverse flow they will be "downflow tubes".

I have a 135 gal FW tank and all live plants and I can tell you what I am using with great success. I have two Rena Filstar Canister filters they are rated for a 75 Gal tank each but Magnum filters would do the same and a 20 gal Wet/Dry system. In the wet dry I use a heater, a powerhead for airation, a foam filter and carbon bag. I have over 60 fish and have not lost one for over three months and the tank is only five months old. I also have a 300 watt heater in the main tank but no UG filter. My water is crystal clear and with bi weekly 10 to 20% water changes my water is very stable.
I hope this will help and if you need more info just let us know.
