Hi there,
Maybe you could help me with this. My aquarium has red gunky chunks underneath the rocks. It is very very red. It is not visible until you begin to move the rocks when vacuuming.
The tank has 3 very small frogs, a couple of small shrimp, 2 loaches (very small), 1 large snail (about 2 inches), numerous little snails (just added them - red gunk was there before), and 1 catfish (10 cm long), and about 6 Tetras.
The gunk looks like guts. Though it is true I started with 5 frogs, the gunk is too much to be dead frog! Besides it keeps coming back. There is an incredible amount of it. However, it is buried under the rocks (which are your regular aquarium rocks - about 5 cm thick). There are no live plants.
I feed 1 pinch of flakes, 3 little frog pellots and 1 algae disk per day. I change 1/3 of the water weekly and clean the two filters about once per month.
Someone told me it could be that the large snail is laying eggs and burying them for protection and something else is ripping them up and eating them.
I use chemicals when I do the water change - I add Chlorine Remover and add some bacteria liquid.
I do not use lights on my tank.
The water is clear. When I vacuum though - it is very dirty under the rocks - the water that is removed is very brown.
I siphen the water our but sucking on the platic vacuum hose. I am sure I've swallowed a mouth or two. I just hope that red stuff isn't some weird parasite. I don't want to have anything growing in me, and ripping out my guts like in the move 'Alien'!!!
Any advice you may have will be appreciated. It is very difficult to find out information on this stuff.
Thank you!!
Cynthia
