Looking for info on freshwater crab/frog/newt aquarium setup

I have a spare 30 gallon aqaurium I want to set up like I have seen some others set up, but I am not sure exactly what kind of equipment I might need such as a filter as the water level will only be at 50% and a conventional power head wouldn't work, I wouldn't think! I would like to keep some fidler crabs, and maybe some newts and frogs as well. I've seen some tanks with the water level halfway up so that way they can get out of the water on rocks and plants. What plants would be good for that? Also, do you have any other special instructions for that type of set up. Any help with this is much appreciated!!

i think you should use large pieces of floating driftwood, magnetic algae scrapers, large rockwork, tunnels, live plants, and guppies to co-exist. :D
