I use a flu val 404 external fliter. In my fliter i have 4 meda cartrages.
first i use: Pre-Filter Media - Ceramic chips capture large particles.
Second: Carbon Media with lime- Activated carbon removes impurities.
Third: Peat Granules - The Fluval Peat granules can be used in the Fluval 404 when replicating soft water conditions for fishes such as discus and tetras.
Last i use: Hagen Filter Media Fluval 404 Biomax Ceramic Rings - When used in the Fluval 404, the biomax ceramic rings provide massive surface for cultivation of beneficial bacteria allowing the Fluval 404 to eliminate toxic ammonia. The biomax ceramic rings never need replacement and should be rinsed with tank water when performing maintenance of the Fluval 404.
what ever you use, make sure that the carbon filter media is not the last thing the water in the filter passes through. the carbon will negate any bacteria growing and needed for the removal of toxic ammonia. the carbon filtering should be the second if not the first stage of your filter media.
hope this helps.
