My guppy finally had her babys. She was swimming to the bottom and staied there then i seen somthing black and clear so i moved her to the breeder and she had a total of 12 babys. only one is allive. the others looked like they were not even totally formed!! and the mother died right after giving birth. why would one have 3 eyes? and no tail and some had a body but no tail??? But im happy to say the one is doing well. Does anyone know why she died? or why the babys where deformed?

It would be hard to tell, unless we knew a little history and some information about your tank...

- What is the ammonia, nitrITE/nitrATE levels of your tank?
- What is your pH level?
- Do you know if your water contains chlorine? If so, do you treat your aquarium water for it?
- Do you add any other additives to the aquarium water?
- How often do you perform maintenance (tank cleaning, filter maintenance, etc.)?
- How often do you do your gravel cleaning & water changes? How much water is removed?
- What there any illness from any other fish in the tank? Were you treating this illness with any type of medication(s)?

It sounds as though she may have given premature birth. Though it's not unusual to find a deformed fry or 2. She may have had an illness, which could have caused the deformaties or she got ill from a sick fry or 2. This could have been something toxic (poor water condition, too many medications, etc.) in the water.

Was this her first birth? Is she a young female or more mature? More mature would be about 2" or longer.

The breeder you placed the female in, is this a breeder trap clear plastic with clear plastic dividers inside it) or a breeder net (plastic frame with a nylon type netting around the frame? I normally place my females in the breeder net and use the breeder trap for the fry. I don't like using the breeder trap for the female, since it's very small and the clear plastic may confuse and stress her, since she wonders why she can't get too far. If it's the breeder trap, then this might have happened.

Anyway, I hope the surviving fry makes it. You have keep the fry in the breeder and feed it finely crushed flakes. Make sure you feed the fry about 3 times a day.
