Hello, I just bought 3 more neons fro my 20 gal tank and one of them looks quite large even for a female. Her belly looks a little pinkish and she is very round! She still schools so there is nothing wrong with her. If she is ready to spawn what do i do??? The only fish i have bred so far are platies, swordtails and guppies. I am trying to start a culture of infusoria by placing a piece of lettuce in a jar of old aquarium water and placing that jar in the window. What do i do when breeding neon tetras???
I need as much advice and help as i can get!!!:HP
Any comments are greatly appreciated!!!!!
I will try to post a pic but my cam is very light sensative and blurry.

Breeding neon tetras are very difficult. The water must be soft and acidic in order for them to be in the mood :D If by chance they do lay their eggs, they (eggs) are sensitive to light, therefore will die. When breeding neons, it's best to have the pair in a seperate tank. Remove the parents once the eggs are laid.

Ok well my water isn't very acidic so i doubt they will but she still looks quite large. If she is ready i will move her and the best male to my 2 gal (or should it be my 10gal?) and then put black construction paper around the tank so no light gets in. It will also be in a dark room. Are there any signs i should watch for to be able to tell when she is going to spawn?

No tell tale signs, though I had no experience in breeding them. I did have neons before, with a few females and plump, but never had any spawn (I think). I just knew that breeding them was difficult, especially with the eggs being light sensitive.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks Eddie! I have lots of rain water collected to use while spawning (except i don't have any peat for a substrate! But i'll get some!:D )
(P.S: I'm posting a pic of my new "german ram" in the thread: "Need Info on German Rams". Take a look he is just starting to get his lovely colours back!)
