I have what should have been a very simple question. Thus far I have not been able to get a straight answer from any site I have visited.

Are Arowanas Fresh or Brackish. All LFS that I have been to keep them in fresh. I saw something on Animal planet that hinted that they live in estuaries. most of these are brackish, correct? As seen in my sygnature I waqnt to keep a couple of these in a large indoor pond. I am very in to having as close to natural biotopes as possible.

Please help me with information of a reputible site to visit.

Thanks
Sean

Welcome to the forum!

You didn't say what type of arowana you want to use, but judging from you signature, I'm assuming a Red Arowana. PetEducation.com is reputable, but I couldn't find any info there on the red ones.....but here are the two pages I did find, they might help:
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=16&cat=1911&articleid=2221
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=16&cat=1911&articleid=2223

FishProfiles.com also isn't too bad, though they may or may not have as much info:
http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/jardini.xml
http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/arowana.xml

Good luck with the pond!

I am a member of the forums at fishprofiles as well. I start most of my research there. I have found a couple things on that site that differ from my experience but that is probably doe to the "every fish is different" rule.
At least they don't have the WCMM listed as a tetra :D
I think the Red Arows are from Asia but I don't know much more than that. You would think that with as much as these things resemble Archers that they would have more in common.

The red arowanas are fresh water and can get to be over 2 &1/2 foot long or more. So with that in mind I would not think of ptting that large a fish in any thing smaller than 6 foot by 4 foot. The depth is not as importnat as the swimming room as they basically stay near the surface. Plu if you do decide to buy one legally then plrepare to get a big loan as they are not cheap. They hire cids to catch cockroaches to feed the arowanas so that they will keep the red color better.

I am aware of the size. The enclosure was going to be about 7' x 5' and about 2' deep. I am planning to build it into a bay window area of my house. I was obviously mislead into thinking that they were a brackish fist. Looks like the dream tank is going to house a mudskipper rather than an Arowana. maybe I will build a wall unit to house an Arow some day.
