I am starting a new 45 gallon freshwater tank and plan to be somewhat planted (to help with algea) and was wondering if a uv sterilizer was a good idea. For filtration I just got a Fluval 304 canister which is rated for a 70 gallon tank and I would use that to drive it. Good Idea?

Theoretically, they can help with keeping some algae populations down, and minimizing bacteria, fungii and parastites, but I don't know if they really work or not. I'm thinking about adding one myself. Figure it can't hurt (at least not that I know of) though they are kind of expensive.

A while back, when I was thinking of getting one because for some mysterious reason no cory cats would survive in my tank, I was told they aren't necessary in freshwater tanks. Do you know anyone who has one and experiences it making a significant difference in anything?

No, but since i read that they help with algea and kill parasites and whatnot i figured that they could only do good on the return on my filter. Is a 304 rated for a 70 gallon enough for a 44 gallon fresh tank?
