I have several palnts in a 29 gal. tall tank. I recently purchase an aqua-glo bulb hoping that it could do a better job at providing light for the palnts, but i'm not sure. the k rating of the bulb is 18,000 k, although it still is only 20 watts. A guy at the fish store said my only option was another fixture that costs 200 bucks. What are the choices available, has anybody ever been sucessful with a custom setup? what about some undewater light fixture?

if you buy a glass canopy you can use another light like you have and you should have 2 wpg if i count right. today im scatter brained.

Its hard to light 29 gallons unless your a DYI guy then you can build your own. There are kits that will provide the light, you would just have to build the canopy.

i have a glass canopy for my tank and it works nice. Check for jebo lights they might have a small light on ebay.

Unless you want to get really fancy with your plants, you should be fine with 20 watts on that tank. I say that because I know of a 29 high that has no extra (outside) light source and the plants grow like weeds. The owner has to cut them back frequently and she has quite a variety, though probably nothing that requires ultra-bright light. Also, remember that your fish will not appreciate strong light and provide them with plenty of space to avoid it if you do make things brighter.

Thanks. does anybody know if those dual bulb lightstrips would be better. I have a solid hood now would a change to a glass hood be benificial?

It would help if you filled out your profile so we can better answer questions. I'm not sure what you mean by canopy........I have wood canopies over three of my tanks with acrylic covers over the tank openings. I think what Buddha_Red is describing are the folding glass covers that fit over glass tanks........some folks call the all-in-one glass cover/light set a canopy. You can get raised light fixtures that sit on top of the tank over the glass. If you have a wood canpoy, then (if you want more light) there are compact florescent kits that can be attached to the "lid" of the canopy. They run between $50 and $200 online depending on the wattage and the size tank.
