u have to turn the heater down and up in small amouts till u get it at desirred temp....tehn should be fine my go up or down a little turn usually corrcts it....i suggest a digital read therometer about 15 bucks....IMO....temperature usually rises about one degree per hour

Do you have a heater in the tank? It should have an adjustment knob and should come on or go off as needed.

yeah, i have a heater in the tank, but i dont think it turns off....ive been letting the heater run for a few hours then i turn it off for a few hours...is that a good thing?...the knob is turned all the way on low but the temp still rises to about 82 and i want it to stay at around 78...

Are you sure that it is the right size? What kind of heater is it? I had a TopFin heater that never turned off and almost boiled my fish! It should turn off when it reaches the temp you set it to.

If the heater isn't turning off at all, it's gone bad and you need to replace it.
