Hi - I have a 75 gallon aquarium, use an Emperor filter system, and have really had no problems for years except that for the last several months I have developed a problem with bugs..... Little flying insects, they appear to be "gnat-like". Often I can see an occasional egg on the surface of the water, but more often I just see the little dead bodies that have hit the glass on the top of the aquarium in an attempt to take flight. Of late, these little bugs have been escaping into my home when I lift the lid to feed. I have done numerous water changes, scrubbed, you name it - but they just keep coming back.... I have no other problems with the water or the fish - I have 3 Parrot fish they do lay eggs (none ever fertilized however), but the mother usually eats them within three days after laying them. I have very large rocks, no live plants, and a couple of pieces of driftwood in the tank. It is freshwater, and I keep it at about 75 degrees. I do not leave the lights on excessively.

Can anyone offer me advice please!?!

I have to admit that I've never heard of anything like this. My first thought would be that some insect is attracted to your lights (like a moth to a bright light) and is laying eggs in the light area (since you see an occasional egg on the water surface). The light may be the attraction or the heat. When the eggs hatch, you see the flying insects. I would suggest a very close inspection of your light fixture/canapy.

In the meantime, I will ask some of the other moderators for their input.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Vicki,
Thank you for your input - It never occurred to me to look in the lighting system........ I will check it out thoroughly and keep you posted.

Thanks!

Any other pet's in the house?? I once had this same problem with a bug with the discription you gave. And the problem was not my Tank at all. It was my Bird[ Red Belly Parrot] some how her food had become infested with these flying buggs. I racked my brain for weeks before I found the source of where they were feeding. After changing out all of her food with new and a new holding con't My problem was solved.

The point of my stories is, that you must find the food source they are feeding on. Thier just going to the tank for water. And are also attracted to the light source. HTH
