The easiest way to tell when a guppy is about to give birth is the size of the dark spot at the back of the tummy. After a couple of times, you will know. My memory says when it is about 1/4 inch in diameter. One of my guppies just had babies, but I didn't pay attention. I just noticed babies in the tank this morning.

Also, I notice that when mine are Really close, they get sluggish and just sit on the bottom of the tank. That's about the time I get 'em into the breeding box. If you plan on keeping the fry you'll need something to separate the fry from the momma and any other fish. I guess after giving birth to 12 babies, you can get pretty hungry. I've found out the hard way, guppy fry make for tasty snacks.

Mine are in the cichlid tank for that very purpose. It's like raising beef cattle. I buy the cheap "feeders" - about $2 per dozen. When there are about 6 left I go and get another 6 dozen. I wouldn't put fancy guppies in my cichlid tank.

With the cichlids, the guppies never are near the bottom unless they want to be invited for lunch ;) . My point is that sitting on the bottom of the tank depends upon what is in the tank. So if Spike_E has preditors in the tank, he won't see them on the bottom. If he has a guppy tank, then you are right, they will be on the bottom.
