View Full Version : Leaking Tank

My goldfish tank has somehow begun to leak around a 1" strip at the top middle of the aquarium. I don't even know how water is getting out since the water level is 1/2" - 1" below the top of the glass. Perhaps it's spashing out from the filter, I don't know.
My question is, can I use any type of silicon to fix it? Since it's at the top, I want to keep my fish in the tank, but I am concerned about the fumes. Will the silicon poison the fish from the fumes?
I'm considering lowering the water by about 25%-50% to keep it away.
Any other tank advice?
Tanks again!
While I don't have a tube of silicone handy, I would follow the procedures as stated on the tube.
This includes applying it in a well ventilated area and keeping any water away from the adhesive until it has taken the time to set and sure.
Even after it cures, allow it some time before raising the water level as the adhesive may have some chemical properties that don't agree with your fish.
As for how it might be leaking, you didn't mention if it was a considerable leak or just a little water.
if it's considerable, it could be due to a vacuum or siphoning effect (sorry, I dont recall the exact term ...induction?) but I would look at the seams/joints where the glass meets to see if water is being sucked upwards.
If it's a little, it could be from your filter or other water movement (eg, powerhead?). Examine your filter output for splash-backs. If it's the latter, make sure the water output is as close to the water surface. BTW, if it's a BIO wheel filter, chances are you will have some water splashed out.
Hope this helps,
Marty

It leaks only a little. Just enough to leave a constant water streak down the front. I'm sure that it's just the filter splashing onto the top seam.
I just wanted to make sure the fumes wouldn't harm the fish.
