In my previous post (http://www.aquariumpros.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1411) I had some questions regarding RFUGF.

I was looking at a powerheads that has reverse flow to be used for RFUGF. I was wondering if these powerheads (or any powerheads/pumps) have some sort of pre-filter you can insert on the powerhead inlet? Please keep in mind since the powerhead is being used for reverse flow, what is normally the outlet (for regular forward flow) will then become the inlet (for reverse flow).

I was concerned about debris or even fry getting into the powerhead while in reverse flow.

There really are no powerheads that are properly designed for reverse flow with intake sponges, etc. The idea of RFUGF died off in the 1980s when it was proven that using a reverse flow design would only work well with very shallow gravel beds. Using an RFUGF with a deep gravel bed will result in many more dead spots than you would have with a regular flow UGF.

Pumps or filters used to run UGF in reverse will lose years of service from the strain as they are not designed for this. Adding a prefilter to the intake of such a pump or filter will cause even more damage to the motor and impellor.

Hagen 402 and 802 powerheads have reverse flow capability, but cannot be equipped with pre-filters. You could try using a Mag Drive Pump with their excellent sponge prefilters. If set up so they are submerged half-way down so they don't suck air, they are your best bet due to their very large powerful motors and impellor systems.
