I will be purchasing the 2028 soon and I was wondering what type of media is normally placed in the top container? This store states Ehfisubstrat, which is already contained in the middle tray. I currently use carbon in my current Emperor 400 filter. I notice there is something similar called Ehfikarbon, among other types of media (Ehfisynth, Ehfifix, and Ehfiflav). Should I use the Ehfikarbon on the top layer of will having 2 layers of Ehfisubstrat provide the best filtration? What to other people normally use for the top layer when using for a freshwater aquarium?

I will be using the 2028 on a 55 gallon tank, but I'm looking to get a 75 or 90 gallon tank.

Hi Ed:

We have to post what Eheim recommends in our store. Most people use activated carbon in a media bag in the top basket, above the white pad, and that works the best. The Ehfikarbon is not recommended as in our opinion it is expensive. It is a very good carbon, but you can do just as well with any good brand of carbon such as Energy Savers, Kent or Aquarium Pharm.
