I realized that some of these forums look pretty quiet, is probably due to the power outage that knocked out NY, NJ, parts of Canada, Ohio, and Detroit. Those who are there, when you finally read this, I hope you all are doing fine.

They're all probably working hard keeping their tanks running, since they have no power. I know I was feeling stressed keeping my freshwater tank running when we had no power for about 10 hours. I could imagine, most of them won't be having power for about 3 days. :(

Well 2/3 of ontario is supposed to be back up now, but the areas that are up are having rolling blackouts -which isn't a problem really, 2 hours isn't too long to worry about anything. We were some of the lucky ones that got power back within 24 hours. I'd really like to find just a list of when power got back up where, and who's still out, but I haven't found anything like that yet :(

What really pisses me off is all the people running their a/c again ALL DAY. It's not hot enough for a/c, at least up here. Get some fans going and it's great. Or go to the beach, or a park. There was lots of breeze out today, you just needed to get it into your house. We have an apartment, so that makes it even harder, but we were fine! Seems like society today has such an attitude of entitlement :-\ Hopefully this is a wake-up call for enough people to conserve energy. Little things like switching to compact flourescent bulbs and turning your air conditioner up a couple degrees (or using fans and only turning it on when it's really bad) go together to not only save you a lot of money on your bills, but reduce demand on the grids preventing something like this from happening. I'm very disappointed that the news agencies are reporting that people should keep their consumption low, but aren't reporting tips on how to stay cool/use less energy.

that was just mayor bloomberg... he figured out that there was a huge spike to canada, but he couldn't put 2 and 2 together that we couldn't really be able to suck THAT much more power than they do, unless something went down. Yes, the outage probably spread from us to New York, but he didn't follow it far enough to realize that it was ohio that knocked us down.

Oh well, our politicians were apparently making asses of themselves as well with accusations, although that could just be the u.s. coverage. The only direct quote I've seen was the premiers office saying "we were informed that it was caused by a lightning strike..." so all the other "so-and-so blamed this" could have been the same thing, the offices saying "we were told this" and then the u.s. media saying the actually leaders came out and blamed things. I never heard on the radio once that someone had made an official statement about the cause, only "speculation."

Kind of odd that some of these forums still look pretty quiet even after things are back up and running. I wonder if some members fried their computers? Or maybe had problems with overflowed tanks that until now they're still cleaning up.

Hopefully they're all ok and maybe have just gone on vacation. Or maybe they just started school.

This is another good reason to not have an overcrowded tank so that the fish will able to get the oxygen that they need with out having to swin at the surface to get it as it is adsorbed into the water.
