I just bought 2 percula clownfish for my 55 gallon tank. I was wondering....how do you tell the male from the female? I'm not sure that I even have a pair (maybe 2 males for all I know) but if anyone can tell me the difference between the two, maybe I'll know if I have a pair ..........
Thank you!

In a group of two, the more dominant fish is or becomes the female, the other is the male. In a larger group setting of three or more, the same will occur. The more dominant becomes the female, the next dominant becomes the male, and the rest remains as juveniles. If the female dies, the male becomes the female and the next most dominant fish becomes the male.

Identifying clown fish gender is also accomplished by its size. In a setting of two the larger will sometimes take on the role as female. If you have an anemone, the male is usually subservient and tend to the anemone and the female. The female usually is more diva like, scouts for food, be sociable with (or arrogant towards) other fish.

Hope this helps,
