I did not see any thread here on cruel methods that fish wholesalers use to get you to buy fish. Some of these include painting the fish different colors, and injecting dyes right into the fish. Watching out for, and not buying fish that have had these cruel treatments will help reduce the number of wholesalers that do this. Here is a link to a thread with many examples of these sorts of things.

That topic has been discussed here, but not for a while now. It's always good to return to it once in a while.

I was talking with my LFS the other day and that same subject came up. She gets requests in from people who go to a big city and see the fish there then want her to order them. She doesn't get them because of the dying, I didn't know it was really a big problem.

I do find it interesting that you can dye a fish to make it have different colors, but I wouldn't buy them for my tank.

i treat my aquarium as my little world. I wouldnt kidnap someone and inject them with anything and sell them off.

well my fishies have the same rights. a clean home, fair treatment and the right food.

i never bring this topic up, because it makes me sick. How anyone could do that to a fish is beyond me.

Hell i have hard time eating fish now LOL

i care too much for my fishies to ever support a trade based on cruelity and down right being mean.

*gets off soap box*

Welcome to the Forum, wfosborn, and thanks for keeping this topic current for those who may not know. Hybridization of some fish, such as the parrot "cichlids" is also a problem that we can mention from time to time.

Thanks for the awareness of Painted Fish. i so remember (from long-ago ) " Painted Turttles ". it seemed like a rage.... every where there was painted turttles in all the pet stores and shops......... ( remember " Gold Finger " ) that actress died from being painted.. its such a shame for pets to be marketted in this way just to make $...... i will speak-up where and when ever i see this situation.. THAT I CAN DO........... Nano Tanks are a new Fad too.. what a waste on marine life forms..........i see so many being displayed and people not knowing how much constant attention nano tank life forms need to survive......... the changes are quick and often ( more often than not ) deadly for the inhabitants........ but then again we live in the consumer age........... we usuall dont worry about what we consume untill it affects/ hurts us.............. thanks again for shareing Painted Fish............. cwrenge

actually the girl that was painted gold didnt die. its an rumor. The mythbusters tried it and although he was feeling a little woosy they determined that being painted gold wont kill you.

i thought she died too until i saw mythbusters and they had an interview with her.

Besides that, You are right! i went to a LFS yesterday and they had 4 or 5 nano tanks. although they look nice and small like you said the amount of attention needed is huge.

the more water there is, the easier it is to keep the water and tank clean. you would need to be an expert to pull off caring for nano tanks i would think.

painted, dyed or altered creatures is wrong. no way to justify that action. the places that do that are in for the money, which is ok but harming fish crosses the line

What is a nano tank? Also, how can you tell if a fish is painted?

its a small square 12 gallon tank. there are very few fish that can live there. a LFS guy who has been into aquariums since the 60's told me the name but i couldnt remember it. only one fish.

99% of the people that buy it will put regular fish in there and thats cruel.
