I haven't even begun to set up my tank, but I was browsing through online fish and live rock prices. Do any of you have an experience with http://www.floridaliverock.com ? If so, were you happy with their supply of live rock?
Where do you buy the bulk of your live rock?

Hi Quiet Tempest... I bought some live rock about two years ago.........150 #.. i picked it up my self at the local airport.........i was very happy with it , as well as another friend who i shared the expense with........ i was persistant in searching for live rock on the net untill i was sure of the cost as well as the quality.... which was a decision i had to make on my inner feelings.... believe me it was a worry... so i'm sure we share simmalar feelings. just keep looking.. ask questions, try to get pic's of those that bought from whomever you inquire with. then decide. as far as my exp.i saved lots... the rock was ok. better than was available in my area. so good luck and trust yourself ..... cwrenge. : :)

No, liverock is strictly a salt thing.

Live rock is basically a porous rock that houses live aninmals and bacteria and acts as a type of filtration in the tank.

it is rock from the ocean that you can put in your saltwater aquarium that still has little critters in it. Its kind of like a "mystery package" almost anything can come out after a few months....colorful algae, urchins, starfish, corals, anemones, shrimp, blah, blah, blah. It is usually the base structure of reef aquariums.

Sounds interesting... how do you make sure it is not bringing something within...like a virus or bacterium....do those get isolated ( quarantined ) like fish??? because in fish we might be able to see what is coming, in a rock with other organisms....not so easy...I guess..

because the rock is usually uncured when you get it - everything is dormant. I do not believe many harmful bacterias can survive? The problem that occurs is getting species of worms or other tiny critters you do not want. Some are VERY hard to get rid of and will kill/eat away at corals and stuff in the tank. Keep in mind you don't normally add fish right after live rock, you let it sit and cure allowing the ammonia blooms to die down and then maybe 10 years later you can add a 'nemo'. lol

Just wondering if Quiet Tempest ordered live rock from tampa bay live rock or not. I've been thinking of setting up a 55g FOWLR tank, but am also considering setting this up as a reef tank. Anyone have experience with them or have a company that provided live rock that was better than what the typical LFS carries?

Nah, I ended up buying my live rock on eBay and from local shops. Sorry I could offer any opinions on Tampa Bay.
