View Full Version : Japanese Koi Any good?

im thinking about getting another tank and put Japanese koi in it. are these Japanese Koi easy to take care of?
these fishes cost from $5 to $100:eek: depending on the size. of course, i want to start them out little. thats more fun.
these koi get REALLLY big. i have seen them from the size of 2 finger length to a whole arm length.:eek:

Do you plan to keep them in a pool that has hundreds of gallons of water? They will need that to live their lives out in a healthy way.

Goldfish grow fairly quickly and even one would soon outgrow a 50 gallon tank. You would need a large (1000+ gallons) and still have to be careful to not overstock. Here is a good site for goldfish:

They have an active forum where you can see how even with the large ponds people have trouble keeping their bio loads down.

Some goldfish don't grow as large as the koi and you might find some that a smaller tank would accommodate. Here is a site that differentiates between koi and other pond fish and smaller goldfish. Their recommendations are fairly reliable:
