i know i know
I was simply amazed at the health and beauty of the 2 inch clown loaches at the la porte texas 77571 store. I bought two, and i wanted to buy the entire tank, but i simply do not have enough room.
Say what you will, but out of all the close local stores, they have the most healthy and vibrant clown loaches. they are at their perfect weight for their age. i swear they must have been fed bloodworms, they are THAT healthy. I have 9 so believe me, i know healthy loaches.
(new tank here i come! not over crowded yet, 15 inches left in aquarium and no agression from any. water always perfect, filtration off the hook (pardon the pun)

Congratulations BR!!! I know how much you love those loaches. It's possible for a Walmart to have healthy fish.....heck, they all could if they would simply train and educate their staff on proper tank care. Our Walmart here hasn't properly trained their staff on where the tanks ARE......much less how to take care of them.
I'm happy for you and your little loachie friends :AP

i was talking botia theroy to the employee which really impressed me. believe it or not, their chidlids are very active and healthy even though they still do not setup a tank the way i like it. They claim its for cleaning ease, which i see, but give me a cycled tank with substrate anyday.
I was impressed, atleast one place corporate, i found a person that actually has three tanks in their home, a person that has been there and done that. it was nice to see the fish in exelent care, i really went there to check on them, it bothered me that they always have them, but happily they are fine.
it shows you, just as we close off our minds to what we precieve to be a written law, we sometimes miss opportunities to find those special suprises where you dont normally expect.

The guys at my local Petco should take a seminar at that store........everytime I go by....there are dead fish floating.....that tells me that there is no supervision.....you can not have fish dying in several tanks all at the same time, .....it is sad....but no hard feelings....understand that people are not hired for their expertise and love for fish.....these are just guys who looked for a job........it is the management those places have.....I think the manager was the manager of the shoe section in another store...got transfered....
Takes special people to care for animal sections...if you have no afinity to pets.....chances are the pet dept will not look good.

oh believe me, as i saw the employee count the dead fish before her time to leave i read her and the manager the riot act. petco is learning not to be so uncaring, i will most definately cause a protest if i see fish being treated badly consistantly. i understand walmart being uneducated, but a petstore cannot and should not be uneducated.
I go there so much, the manager knows me. I explain everything wrong with each tank and all fish i see that are sick.
Maybe one day, all the fish will be treated well, as for now, they come home with me if they are healthy.

...yes...I do not like putting down nobody, that is not me....Petco has everything to become top of the line ....money...equipment....but the hiring is the problem....in my view...the managers and staff in the fish area are not fish people......off course I understand some Petco or WallMart stores could end up very well staffed , and function efficiently....I know....just my local Petco is sad....those guys are not mean...you can tell....they just do not know what to do......and the fish suffer.
I understand they are not in the business of caring for fish, it is just sales......perhaps I am wishing far too much from them ( staff ) ....
Those big stores are "business oriented" , but, in my view, pet stores are business oportunities for animal loving persons, have to go together.....business oriented people w no inclination to pets other than revenue from sales see nothing wrong in the activities of some of their stores, but animal caring people like us can detect it, we are the pet detectives ......we can see the problems. Hard not to notice. :(

I truly believe none of the "fish people" in the store are cruel or mean to fish. Our society has taught most of us that dying goldfish in a bowl is just something that happens when your a kid
Slowly i see things changing a little. When people like us, provide a smart and intelligent discussion with managers and higher ups they will do something if enough people do that.
i do my part, But with that said, i will buy a fish in a second if its healthy from there. Sometimes they have the most surprising fish. I guess its our responsibility to be educated since we cannot always trust what we hear in stores.

Sometimes its not a lack of knowlege, well it is but, so many darn people have 0 common sence and it's horrible to be able to watch someone pick up something like equipment of animals and have no sweet clue on what to do, and then someone with half a head on their shoulders pickes it up and runs with it. Sure you may make some mistakes but come on people use your head. AHHHHHH. thank you for listening (well reading) my rant.

I think the concept of a chain petstores are okay...I'll use petco for my example...They sell all this equipment for most kinds of pets and they sell livestock and they do it pretty cheaply and there is supposed to be staff there to help you own a pet for your personal enjoyment. Thats the utopia in practice though you get suppliers that mistreat their livestock (mostly parrots at least the ones they can sell) The animals are often neglected, the staff are just there for the paycheck and don't have personal experience or at least have knowledge about the animals care. But wait there are the handy care sheets oh boy...There is a caresheet about how to set up a freshwater tank it gives the one inch rule and all that good stuff...then there are caresheets on the individual fish and they give the potential size and the temperment and maybe even minum tank size. So why do they hand you caresheets and then allow you to buy a insanly small tank with a very large fish? The consumer can now even read they need a bigger tank. There is something wrong because it should work even if the dealer has no clue what they are selling.
I know I chose petco but I have to say if you know what your looking for and you can get someone to help you they are pretty good for being a chain. When i used to go there all the time their staff had personal experience with the department they worked in and shared their knowledge that way. Although the methods could be a bit questionable at least they gave honest answers.
