having trouble keeping my tank temp in balance.spikes to 82+ during the day. Never had a problem with it before, but just installed a closed loop with an ampmaster 3000. The pump doesn't look like it could pass that much heat with the way it is designed. I have no heater, a 400w mh, 2 110w vho super actinics, Mag 9.5 for return. With both hood doors open(hood has 2 4" fans, one on either end), and both stand doors open, the temp can reach as high as 82. With doors closed, up to 84! Help! It is the pump, do I have to invest in a spendy chiller?

Well, you could try adding another pair of fans, but you should look into a chiller, that's probably what youll need in the end, and even though you don't need a heater, you should still have one just to help maintain an even temp. Or you could see about changing out the ampmaster with a mag. Wait, how big of tubing did you use for the closed loop, and what kind of ins and outs did you use???

I am using 1.5" pvc for the loop. They are reduced at the bulkheads to 3/4" for both inlets(2) and outputs(4). What is a decent chiller for a 125 gal tank. Would hopefully like to find one under $300, but the more I look, the less doubtful that seems.

Hey Jess,
Devin hit it on the head, W/ MH's a chiller is almost a must. If the tank is hitting 84 now just think what it will hit(86-88??) in the summer.
A heater is also a must, even if it rarely turns on it helps keeps the water stable.
All pumps will add heat to the water, thats why I dont put any of my pumps(all Mags) inside the sump, I have the sump drilled so i can run the pumps outside the sump so the air can cool them down.
