I have 36 watts of lighting in my 30 gallon tank and don't use CO2. I was thinking about putting in a nice surface plant (hopefully not too invasive but I am happy to do some gardening as needed) for some of the fish to have shade when they want it, and for possible future bubblenests (I'm optimistic). Does anyone have any suggestions of something that would look nice? Even a link to a good reliable plant website would be great. Thank you!

I use watersprite. It does just fine floating, or planted. You can check plant profiles at Plantgeek (www.plantgeek.net), just hit the tab for the "Plant Guide". They also have lots of good plant info and a forum.

Hornwort (http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_search.php?search=hornwort&type=Search) would be another plant. You can keep it floating or if you get tired of it being on the surface, you can plant it as well.
