I bought a hang on the back refugium for my 38 gal saltwater tank one week ago. The employee at the store told me to put some live sand at the bottom of it and he also gave me a few live rock fragments to put in there too. He gave me a fairly large piece of plant to have in there also. It came with a light fixture that sits on the top.
My problem now, is that after one week of it running, the refugium's sand, rock fragments, and the plant is covered in a brown algae that is getting pumped into the large tank and now the large tank has a thin coating of this same brown algae on the sand (which was white and clean looking).
The tank has been set up for 2 months cycling before I put any livestock in it. I put two clown fish in there and a shrimp (I forget the name of the shrimp, but he is very dark red with white dots on him).
Any advise on what is going on? I don't want to let this get out of hand and I certainly don't want to add any more livestock to the tank until I know what is happening.
