View Full Version : Hiq? Sounds good to me
hey sorry I accidently posted this in the wrong spot previously. I found this Hiq thing in Skymall when i was on my way to Boston. Actually if i'm remembering this correctly it's called Hiq Zero water exchange, or something like that. Anyways I like the concept to it, but what do you guys think...it says you never have to change your tank water ever again.

Water changes not only remove nitrates, but hormones as well. Water changes also replenish coumpounds that get used up as well as water that has evaporated.

Basically? It's a gimmick to get people to spend money. The fish still need water changes to bring in the nutrients and minerals that fresh water adds to the system. Personally, I see it as a good way to screw up the balance in a tank and kill off the fish ... one of those "if it sounds too good to be true" things. ;)

As P. T. Barnum used to say, "There's a sucker born every minute".
You are right, a sucker is born every minute. If you recall to the period you were born sucking is the only thing newborns know how to do. LOL sorry i had too..
Ok, Now that I've gotten that ^ out of the way...
They're website has an article about how it's based on fish farming. http://www.hiq-usa.com/Bright_future_for_tiger_grouper_fish_farming.asp
http://www.hiq-usa.com/zero_water_exchange_system_parts.asp I think the bio magic and vita magic are meant to replenish the water. I'm going to look into this thing in detail. I would love not changing aquarium water.

So would the rest of us ... we just recognize this as a gimmick. First, no matter what they say, you can't keep live plants with a UGF, even if it is in reverse flow, so (IMO) they flat out lied there. Been there, done that, pulled the UGFs out. And they are deliberately creating nitrogen gas? Any of it gets in the water (and It's likely to) you run a high risk of killing the fish. Sorry, but when I read their FAQ it set off all sorts of alarms in my head. And they never addressed the fact that there are other things than the nitrogen products that need to be removed with water changes.

I sounds like a room where people are living and nothing is going out of that room, including the people, not even the bathroom waste products, they are trying to use the bathroom products to grow plants for use for the people food., they will throw in some things once in a while but not take anything out. Does this sound healthy to you?
